Each
year, the Children’s Services Division of HCJFS honors the foster youth
graduating high school during a "Celebration of Dreams" ceremony.
The event will take place June 12 at the 20th Century Theatre and will recognize the efforts of 47 youth in foster care who have overcome many obstacles to graduate.
One 2013 graduate, Brian Sherrill, was placed into foster care four years ago.
As part of the transition, Brian was forced to change schools.
Brian knew he would be attending a much harder school and was nervous
about keeping up with his academics.
“It was like nothing I’d done before,” Brian said.
However, with the support of his foster mother and all of the teachers at his school, Brian walked across the stage on June 2 to receive his diploma. He said that he could not have done it without
his foster mother and teacher's help.
Stacy Sutton, Brian’s caseworker, talked about how great Brian has been to work with how proud she is of him.
“I’m overwhelmed with pride for Brian. He’s overcome many obstacles and he’s been very devoted to his education,” said Sutton.
Brian would like to thank his foster mom and all of the teachers at Mason for their help over the past few years.
