Director's Letter: Medicaid Expansion Arrives in Ohio this Month
Beginning December 9, 2013, more low-income Ohioans can apply for
Medicaid, with coverage starting on or after January 1.
Now, families can earn up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level
and still be eligible for Medcaid. That is $2,245 (gross) a month for a
single mother of two or $2,708 a month for a family of four.
Experts predict about 42,000 Hamilton County residents will be
eligible. That is on top of our current caseload, which totals more than
175,000 county residents. That is approximately one out of every four
people in this county!

Food Assistance Changes Effective Jan. 1
Beginning Jan. 1,
2014, many Hamilton County food assistance recipients will have
to prove that they are working either in a job or work experience program to continue receiving
benefits. This change means that any adult between the ages of 18 and 50,
who is not pregnant, does not have a disability and is not in an
assistance group with a minor child, will need to get
involved in a work experience program now in order to produce
the required documentation after Jan. 1.

Donate Gifts to Foster Children this Holiday Season
Several thousand toys
will be delivered to area foster children through a partnership
between Toys for Tots and Hamilton County Job and Family Services
this holiday season.
"The holidays can often
be a difficult time for many of the children we serve. This time of year
is meant to be a time to celebrate family, but many of the children we
serve may be disconnected from their biological family or wishing for a
forever family," HCJFS Director Moira Weir said.

Twelve Children Have a Permanent Home for the Holidays
Twelve-year-old
Leasia Smith said that National Adoption Day was one of the most
important days in her life. It is the day she became a daughter, instead of a foster child.
“It’s such a big step in my life,” Smith said.
Smith, along with her three siblings, was one of 12 children
who joined six loving, permanent, forever families in the annual
November Mass Adoption Ceremony.
