Wear Blue on April 9

Weir2010I am excited to see the many people who are signing on to our “Wear Blue. Child Abuse is Preventable” campaign on April 9. We have heard from businesses, politicians, news anchors and many of our partners in the social services community who plan to support us that day.

This is part of a statewide campaign aimed at raising awareness of child abuse and encouraging people to prevent it or report it when it happens. Most of Ohio’s 88 counties are participating.

Child abuse is a significant community problem. Many citizens are unaware of how widespread the problem is. They are convinced it isn’t happening in their family or their neighborhood.

We receive more than 5,000 new reports of abuse every year. One in 11 children in this community will be served by our Children’s Services Division this year.

Believe me when I tell you it is happening in every neighborhood of this community. Believe me when I tell you it will take the whole community to solve it.

I hope you will join us. Hopefully, you will see a lot of people in blue that day. Your family members, your friends, your co-workers — people in businesses, schools and the media, too. Channel 12’s Cammy Dierking is our honorary chairwoman, but you’ll see anchors on all four local network affiliates dressed in blue on April 9.

It is an easy thing to do. Throw on your blue suit, blue dress, blue, shirt, blue tie or any of your blue accessories and join the effort!
