May is National Foster Care Month
As of April 30, Hamilton
County Job and Family Services had nearly 1,000 children in foster care.
May is National Foster Care Month and I would be remiss if I did not offer a huge ‘thank you’ to the hundreds of foster parents in Hamilton
County who regularly care for our children.
There is no denying that
becoming a foster parent is hard work.
Every parent knows that
raising children is no easy task, and every day foster parents
throughout the county volunteer to take on that responsibility for a
stranger’s child. They feed, nurture and care for foster children, as
they would their own. Moreover, they serve as a positive role model for
children who desperately need one.

Four Children Safe Thanks to HCJFS Teamwork
Thanks to an incredible collaboration spanning two states and two sections within Hamilton County Job and Family Services, four children are in a safe place tonight.
Authorities in Kalamazoo, Michigan contacted HCJFS for help after a mother vanished with her four children. The authorities had obtained an emergency custody order, but before they were able to gain physical custody, the mother fled. The woman had known relatives in the Cincinnati area and authorities suspected she might be staying with them.

First HEMI Graduate Earns Degree
In 2009, Hamilton County Job and Family Services worked closely
with County Commissioner Greg Hartmann and the University of
Cincinnati in setting up the Higher Education Mentoring Initiative
(HEMI) to pair foster students with mentors to help them with their
education. We are proud to announce that Mariah Maxwell
recently became the first HEMI student to graduate college. In late
April, Krista Ramsey of the Enquirer wrote a
column worth reading.
Congratulations to Mariah; we are very proud of you!
National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day
Please
join HCJFS in promoting National Children's Mental Health Awareness
Day Thursday, May 9.
The annual event is sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Services Administration (SAMHSA) to raise awareness about the importance
of children's mental health as they mature and develop. The theme for
this event is "Heroes of Hope." A Hero of Hope is an adult who provides
influence and positive support to youth and young adults as they mature
into adulthood. HCJFS sees Heroes of Hope every day in Children's
Services. Our heroes are our foster parents, mentors and volunteers who
support youth and young adults with mental health challenges. Please
join us in thanking our heroes and spreading the word that May 9 is
National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day.
