Twelve Children Have a Permanent Home for the Holidays

Twelve-year-old Leasia Smith said that National Adoption Day was one of the most important days in her life. It is the day she became a daughter, instead of a foster child.

“It’s such a big step in my life,” Smith said.

Smith, along with her three siblings, was one of 12 children who joined six loving, permanent, forever families in the annual November Mass Adoption Ceremony.

Although adoptions are normally confidential, these families agreed to publicize the Nov. 22 ceremony in honor of National Adoption Month.

The video and live chat can be viewed at http://www.hckids.org/adoptionceremony.htm and pictures from the ceremony are available on our Facebook page.

The ceremony, which put the number of adoptions in Hamilton County for 2013 above 80, received coverage from WCPO, Local 12 and WLWT, as well as others.

For one family from a previous adoption ceremony, the celebration still continues today. The Cublios, who adopted their son Elijah on National Adoption Day in 2011, celebrate Elijah's adoption day every year. In fact, Elijah still remembers the exact day and time he moved in with them.

Kathy Cublio and her husband, James, were foster parents when Elijah came to live with them in early 2011. When they decided to adopt him nine months later, their caseworker, Emily Moore, suggested they participate in the adoption day ceremony.

"We decided, why not?" Kathy Cublio said.

After talking with Elijah, they decided to join in the ceremony.

"There were so many people that were so happy," Cublio said.

They loved all of the families coming together to celebrate the day.

Life post-adoption has been great for Elijah. He joined Cub Scouts and is about to be promoted to a Boy Scout.

"He's a really great kid," Cublio said.

Elijah still remembers the exact day and time he moved in with them.               The Cublios made Elijah's adoption
                                               official in the 2011 ceremony
