Did you know? Top things you need to know about child support

Hamilton County's child support system is here to serve you and your family. If you have a child support case, we've developed a few tips to get you started in the system. Find more detailed information here.

1. Know your numbers before calling to expedite your experience:

  • SETS case number (always begins with a 7)
  • Court case number
  • Social Security number for each child
  • Hamilton County CSEA’s phone number (513) 946-1000

2. Keep us posted with all of your current information. If you have moved, become disabled, changed jobs or gained custody of a child, we need to know. Report all important changes to us at www.hcjfs.org/Forms/changereport.htm

3. The clock is ticking. Remember: You start owing child support as soon as the order is signed in court. It may take up to eight weeks for your employer to begin deducting support from your wages. To avoid falling behind, you should make payments early.

4. How to pay:

For most people, child support is withheld from their wages. But, if you are laid off, self-employed, or waiting for your employer to start wage withholding, you should pay by check or credit card.

  • Send payments by check (include your SETS case or court order number) to:
    Ohio Child Support Payment Central
    PO Box 182372
    Columbus, OH 43218-2372
  • Make online payments at www.hcjfs.org
  • Make payments in person*:
    HCJFS Cashier’s Office
222 East Central Parkway, Third Floor
    Cincinnati, OH 45202
    Monday-Friday: 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

*personal checks, employer checks and credit cards are not accepted at the cashier’s office

5. Make child support count. When a judge or magistrate orders a person to pay child support, it must be paid through the child support system. Gifts and other extras for your child will not count toward your child support.

6. What to do if the other parent doesn't pay: If the other parent does not pay, your child support worker can help you take the proper action. Contact us by calling (513) 946-1000 to get started.

7. What to do if you owe and don't pay: If you have difficulty paying or have lost your job, tell your child support worker, they can help you work through a limited number of options. Call us at (513) 946-1000 to get started.

8. When you will receive your first payment: If the other parent begins paying immediately, you should receive your first payment within a few weeks after the court sets the child support order. If you are on public assistance, your child support payments will go to the state. Payments are sent to your bank account or e-QuickPay card.
