There are three types of child care establishments in the state of Ohio:

  1. Child Care Center
  2. Type A Family Child Care
  3. Type B Family Child Care

Here are the major differences:

Location
  • off-site facility
  • provider’s residence
  •  provider’s residence
Group size
  • Not to exceed license capacity
  • Staff/child ratio and maximum group size limitations by age group must be maintained
  • 7-12 children
  • 1-6 children, with no more than three children under age 2
Staff
  • director/administrator and any number of employees/child care staff members
  • provider, employee(s), or child care staff member(s)
  • provider, employee(s), or child care staff member(s)
Inspections
  • at least one prior to provisional licensure
  • at least two during the provisional period (12 months)
  • at least one each state fiscal year after continuous licensure
